Kabukicho Tips: A Quick Overview

Kabukicho Tips: A Quick Overview

Kabukichō is Tokyo’s red-light district and a popular area for unique entertainment. Located in Shinjuku, Kabukichō houses an assortment of things-to-do, ranging from prostitutes to the famous Robot Restaurant. Kabukichō is not a family destination, but it can be fun for adults who enjoy its splendor responsibly.

Recently, Tokyo authorities have been cracking down on establishments in Kabukichō suspected of robbing intoxicated patrons; likely by spiking their drinks. The reason for the crackdown stems from an alarming number of complaints, highlighted by the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo sending out a travel advisory concerning these robberies. Tokyo is a very safe city, especially compared to other metropolises, but an area like Kabukichō does have risk if one is not careful.

Here are a few Kabukicho tips to keep in mind before you go play. Do not get intoxicated in Kabukichō. Practically all robberies involve victims who were intoxicated. Kabukichō requires one to be alert and aware of their surroundings. For example, many clubs in Kabukichō will have pretty women who appear to be fellow patrons, but in reality they are there to make money and they usually have male accomplices. If a beautiful woman begins hitting on you in Kabukichō, it’s likely too good to be true. Kabukichō is not ideal for hookups or meeting your soul mate. Do not go to random places in Kabukichō. Try to verify whether the establishment has a good reputation, but even “safe” clubs are capable of having shady people there; keep your guard up.

One of the best things in Kabukichō is the Robot Restaurant. Firstly, it’s safe and that is great, but it’s amazing due to the shear insanity and spectacle of the experience. Robot Restaurant packs all the Japanese pop culture foreigners marvel at into one show. You will get to see robots of course, along with scantily clad women in metal bikinis, obnoxious lights, maniacal music, and lasers. Just do your best to avoid all the people trying to hustle you into their club on your way to Robot Restaurant, they can get annoying.

Kabukichō has a lot of love hotels and they could be interesting for couples or friends who want to see Japan’s bizarre side. I have heard rumors that themed love hotels have been toned down from their prior glory, although I’m guessing they still have some strange ones. As you walk around Kabukichō you will see them, the words “rest” and “stay” are keywords.
