Tokyo Mixology: Code Name Mixology

Heavy Hitters: Takoyaki and Okonomiyaki

Tokyo mixology is alive in Akasaka with Code Name Mixology. As a New York City expat living in Tokyo, one thing I missed after moving was a mixology restaurant. Luckily Code Name Mixology is here to provide some needed relief. They have an excellent selection of flavor themed cocktails, along with talented mixologists who will take what flavors you like and create a custom cocktail. I gave them a flavor profile of sour, kumquat, and salty and ended up with a delicious well balanced drink.

Located in the commercial district of Akasaka, which is close to the foreign-friendly Roppongi, Code Name Mixology is mostly frequented by foreigners from my experience. I personally believe this will change as more Tokyo locals become familiar with mixology as a concept, but in the interim it’s great that you can go on a Saturday night without waiting in line. The staff can handle your orders in English and menus have English translations as well, so no fear in that regard.

If you are in Tokyo during the winter you can do what I did and go ice-skating before heading to Code Name Mixology for food and drink; helped heal my blisters and bruises. This year’s sponsor of the Akasaka ice-skating ring is Toyota and you’ll get to enjoy a creepy life-like Beat Takeshi statue that stands next to a car as you circle the ring. There is a nice seasonal light display outside the shops next to the ice-skating ring that is synced to music.

My favorite drinks are the India Egg and Thai flavored Tom Yum cocktails. Both captured the essence of their theme perfectly. India egg is creamy, light, and teaming with Indian spices. The Tom Yum is spicy and refreshing, with a lemongrass stick adding zest while functioning as a stirrer. In addition to their amazing cocktails they have an assortment of food items on the menu as well; their pickles were amazing. Also, the smoked plate accompanies the drinks magically sporting a smoke egg and an awesome use of nori, cheese, and Japanese pickle. In summary, a great entry into the mixology pool and a fantastic destination for a night out in Tokyo. Google Map
